Everything keeps minimizing

I absolutely cannot figure out what is wrong...

Say, for example I have Firefox running. As soon as I want to open up mail, or itunes or whatever, everything else will minimize except for the program I am opening. If that makes sense?

Is this a mission control problem or something else entirely? It drives me crazy... I like to have firefox and mail open at the same time, so I can see both on my desktop and can navigate from one to the other by clicking rather than switching in the dashboard.

Somewhere in System Preferences (I think) there is an option to only show one window at once. Uncheck that. I think it's an unusual feature, but I've accidentally hit it, and then had issues.
