Apple is continuing on with the beta testing of a new iOS 17.2 update, and the third beta includes new features and refinements for existing features. We are still early in the beta testing process, which means there are new discoveries to make.

iOS 17.2 beta 3 is available to developers right now, but Apple should be making the update available to public beta testers later this week.

Apple Music Favorite Songs

In the Music section of the Settings app, there is now an option to add songs to your Music Library when they are favorited. The feature is toggled on by default, but it can be turned off if desired.

The option to "Favorite" songs was added in iOS 17.1.

Keyboard

Apple has added an option to disable inline predictions when typing. It can be accessed by opening up the Settings app, choosing General, going to Keyboard, and scrolling down to the "Show Predictions Inline" option.

Phone and FaceTime

In the Phone and FaceTime settings, there is a Share Name and Photo option that uses the Contact Poster. Name and Photo Sharing can be toggled off, set to Contacts Only, or set to Always Ask, which prompts you before sharing that information with others.

This setting was previously available for the Messages app.

FaceTime

If you join a FaceTime call that includes a contact you have blocked, you will now get a warning. Apple provides warnings when joining a call with a blocked contact, or when a blocked contact is joining a call you're already on.

Photos

When opening the Photos app after updating to iOS 17.2 beta 3, there is a prompt to allow Photos to access the Apple Music library. Photos is then able to use Apple Music to curate songs for Memories.

Photos is listed as an app accessing Apple Music under Settings > Privacy and Security after enabling access. Note that Photos already had this capability, but Apple now offers an option to turn off access.

More iOS 17.2 Beta 3 Features

Really odd.. I had "enable dictation" to ON and the auto-punctuation was not there. Turn OFF that setting and it appeared. Now it is there no matter if dictation is turned on or off.

I have no problems with providing updates, but does anyone feel like these incremental feature additions are just so random and hard for users to keep track of? Rather than these feature updates that trickle in throughout the year, they should just wait and do them all at once, then just fix bugs the rest of the year. And they should provide a really comprehensive list of all key feature updates that are easy for users to access.

Turn it around: like many thoughtful users, it’s perfectly fine to stay on iOS 16 for a long time coming.

Not sure if I just overlooked this feature previously, but I noticed Siri will describe the contents of an image when using your AirPods. It’s pretty limited to family friendly content - we had some fun testing it

These are beta updates, not public releases. There is no rhyme or reason behind what gets into a beta release. The features arrive as the teams finish them to the beta level and add them to the next release. If you can't deal with the randomness of betas, by all means, DON'T test them!

Totally get it and accept the risk.. in my case I was actually hoping that the beta would fix the reminders issue that has existed since 17.0 release, seems to only impact The 15 Series

I also have an issue where it will crash when trying to setup "scheduled summary" each and every time I select any item after turning the toggle on. Has existed for me since 17GM

Have completely wiped phone (twice) reloaded to NON beta version and same issue

Huzzah for the Favorites option to add/not add to Library! I have submitted feedback like never before asking for that option. I feel Apple Music repeats too many of the same songs and there's very little variety in their For You playlists, so I went on a favoriting spree after it was released wanting to get better recommendations primarily. I didn't find out until too late that the songs/albums would be added to my library, and it wreaked havoc. So many songs/albums were repeated on my library simply because the Apple Music version I had marked as favorite was a Deluxe edition or some small variation in name, and it then just added duplicates left and center. When it actually matched to existing tracks in my library, it duplicated and added 'favorite' versions on top of the existing one, leaving me with albums that have the same songs twice and three times included. This will be a welcomed solution by me. Thank you Apple for listening!

Settings-> Safari-> Clear History and Website Data will now remember your last config instead of resetting after each use!

Can they add an option to stop changing previous words with slide to type, it’s so frustratingly irritating and completely unnecessary.

Any word on whether or not they have fixed Apple Music Play Counts / Last Played info syncing from IOS back to MacOS?

I wish Apple would add a number row on the top of the keyboard.
I never realized this but you’re absolutely right - it’s annoying having to press the 123 button all the time to do something simple like tying numbers.
It may exceed Apple’s guidelines on keyboard height?

Anyone else noticing a 1/2 second or so of the screen dimming when switching into another app (already open)?

I've noticed it in Safari and the Discourse (forum) app).

That would just make the keyboard unnecessarily taller, imo, impacting screen real estate. At most it should be an option (disabled by default), but the iOS keyboard has never had a number row at the top, and so I don't expect Apple to ever add it. Plus, there's literally no point, the 123 button already shows a number row and only requires an additional tap to access, which doesn't impact usability that much. I mean, I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have for the people who want it, but at the same time the same functionality already exists under a single button tap in the keyboard UI.

No, I vehemently disagree with this. I much prefer the additional updates that add new features. Plus, it allows Apple to narrow the scope of major iOS releases, such as iOS 16 and iOS 17, and then just add features that didn't make it into the initial update with minor updates throughout the iOS version's life cycle. Plus, it helps with avoiding a billion bugs that Apple's developers have to track down and squash. Apple has always followed this model since the first iPhone came out back in 2007, I see no reason why it should change.

Stupid fixes. Please god bring back old Flash toggle in camera. All i want.
Shouldnt be different to turn flash permanently ON.
Put it back in the flash toggle in top left.
This already exists by pressing the down arrow at the top, tapping the lightning bolt at the far left of the menu that appears, and tapping "On". After that it will stay on permanently. Most people don't want flash to permanently stay turned on, which is why they made the flash toggle only be a temporary action unless you permanently turn it on in the in-app settings.

I don’t know if this has been talked about but I believe this is a nice feature, when you are taking a picture and you zoom into a subject, it shows a rectangle to show when in the larger picture you are. I noticed that with iOS 17.2 Beta 2.
