I have recently begun to use an iMac and each time I start up, every application that I have used in the past opens up a window for me. I have been closing them one by one as I cannot find a way to prevent them from opening automatically. Please help.

If you are running LION ......

After you click on the SHUTDOWN from the Apple Menu....

BEFORE you click on the final SHUTDOWN....

Unclick the box next to ..... Reopen Windows When Logging Back In

I really wish they had a default option to keep that option turned off...
