Everything sync'd except for contacts?

I did a quick search but couldnt really find a thread that answered my question.
Basically ive sync'd my new phone with itunes, but for some reason everything except for my contacts when onto the new phone.
Ive put them onto the new phone manually now, but was just wondering for future reference how to get around this problem?

Edit: Ive just realised that my messages didnt go onto the new phone either!

What did you check off under Info for iTunes to sync your contacts with?

Not quite sure what you mean, but i have the 'all contacts' option checked under the 'sync address book contacts' subheading.
