I'm trying to jailbreak my new iPhone 3GS that I accidentally updated to 5.0.1 and which has the newer bootrom. Will there ever be a way to do this or am I just stuck now with a phone I'll never be able to break?

There is a tethered jailbreak available 5.0.1. You can also install semi tether from big boss after you jailbreak your phone.
