Ex HD problem

Not sure this is the right place to put this but I have a problem with my external 1TB HD. Just as I almost filled it with awesomeness it died. Its not that old but proves useless. Sometimes the comp will recognize it, most times not. Sometimes I can get into the file structure a little, most times no. In other words I have 1TB of nothing.

Any advice welcome. Should I try to reformat it? Should I just throw it away. Disk Utility can't do anything with it.
