Exactly what can I plug in to my Aluminum Keyboard's USB Ports?

Anything that doesn't expect large amounts of power from a USB port (hard drives, optical drives, things that charge like iPods or iPhones, and some flash drives).

So, input peripherals and some low-power flash drives.

Other than a mouse the only things I've been able to use so far are my camera and keyboard (ie musical keyboard).

I have a 1TB Fantom Drive plugged into my aluminum keyboard which is plugged into a MBP 2.4GHz SR. I also have the wireless receive for the Logitech MX Revolution in the other port. The drive works great!
