I haven't read a clearer overview and analysis of the iPhone 12 lineup than this one recently published by John Gruber on his Daring Fireball website:

Thoughts and Observations on Apple's 'Hi, Speed' iPhone 12 Event

It is refreshing to see such clear and cogent writing among the piles of muddled bs that passes for Apple coverage nowadays.

Corrected Link

Edit to add: So after correcting the link, I actually read the article. It sure brings some down to earth clarity to Apple's intro to the 2020 iPhones. Good link to give to those who aren't clear on the situation.

Thank-you for the correction - - I have now updated the OP link as well.

I thought it was a good article with some interesting ideas - a lot of the content churned out 'around Apple' is just garbage, or rehashed versions of what we've all seen and read already.

Gruber is a good dude. Been around from early days of Apple and has a good podcast where he basically has a conversation about Apple current events. Things you’d talk about if you were at work with a group of people.

He posted good article about the last Watch release as well And tries to clarify single loop watch band sizing.

He jokes at himself for being long winded in writing and speaking. I find him informative and enjoyable.

Thanks for posting that link. I was under the impression that the upgraded sensor in the Max was on the wide-angle lens but apparently it is on the regular lens which Apple confusingly calls wide! Because of this I will wait for the Max and not go with the 12 Pro this year.

It´s a tricky line up for people who don´t want the mini... from iPhone 12 128gb (which I consider the minimum memory these days) it is not so expensive to go to the Pro 128GB and from the Pro it is very close to Pro Max 128GB, which is not only bigger, but the main, most imporant camera is probably much better. Damn...

He makes a great point about the ‘missing’ models, I would definitely have gone for a cheaper non-Pro Max model simply for the bigger screen.
