Sorry if I am being daft here, couldn't find any other forum posts along these lines and I know the V2 firmware isn't out yet, but...

if my company uses exchange 2003 server, and Cisco VPN but doesn't have activesync (and/or won't share the details for config if they do) will the iPhone still be able to sync up with my work Exchange server (by emulating Outlook client or something).

*not that I am trying to justify to the Mrs, buying one as a business tool!*

it will need activesync to do synchronization. You can also get email over IMAP or POP if they open the ports
 
ActiveSync Server is built into Exchange 2003 and 2007; whether or not it is enabled and supported by your organization is the question.
