I just went through a lot of threads but could not find someone who is in a similar situation. Sorry if anyone else already posted something similar.

So here goes my story.
The first phone I got on Friday from the online apple store had a dead home button, so I called CS and they told me to go to a retail store and swap it out, so I did.

On Sunday, I went into a retail apple store and they were able to exchange my phone to a new one, the phone looked OK so I took it. But later I noticed that the black bezel had two scuffs very close to each other when I was browsing the web under sun light. Under decent amount of light, these two scuff marks just shine and it is very disturbing.
Since I could not go into a store or call the store again on Sunday, I called them on Monday to ask if they can swap it out via shipping, and they said I have to bring in my phone if I am calling about the appearance.

I made an appointment and went to an apple store, and they told me that they don't have a new phone to replace mine with. The specialist advised me to return the phone in a week or so when there would be more phones in stock, so I just had to leave then.

I read some threads that Apple is shipping exchange phones to some people with these problems, but I am not sure why they told me to go to a store. Would this be because I had to exchange my first phone at a retail store?
Another question I have is about returning the phone later and repurchasing it. The genius kept telling me that it is a very easy process that can be done in a single transaction. I am not sure if this is the right way to go at this point.

I would really appreciate any comments on this. I went through so much trouble and spent so much time since my first dead phone.
