It it possible to (temporary) exclude messages in Apple mail?

I'm trying to clean out my 'Archive' folder but wish to say search for - <subject line> or wildcard or something to list all other messages BUT leave the ones in Inbox alone (since by default all messages coming in also goes to Archive folder as well)

Is there a way to do do this, or must i set rules, and know ahead of time say the subject line(s) i need to remove or exclude from Inbox (not really the best way, because i still need to read them, I just wish to filter then so i can just select all in Archive folder and remove)

I guess filter all imore email say to one and then go through, but i would need enough info in subject line, so that could still be the thing.
