I'm bummed that exercise ring doesn't update using Outside Walk.
When I was going to the gym and doing indoor walk, it would say I had exercised and spin the ring.
But the outdoor walk does not. It says I did the exercise, but the ring doesn't move at all.
Am I doing something wrong?
I've tried starting the exercise from both the steps on my watch face and the workout app on the watch.
Neither advances the ring, yet says I completed.
Using a Watch 4, 44mm.

Mine updates for outdoor walks. In the Activity app, it shows an outdoor walk workout, right below the flights climbed. I always start workouts from the Workouts app.

Just found something online...hopefully this is it...I'll know tomorrow:
On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services: Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on. In the list of apps beneath, if the option is shown (depending on your watch mode), then check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using

Oh well, just walked a 20 minute mile and only got credit for 6 minutes.
Either I'm just too slow of a walker, or something is amiss.
At least I finally got the map to show up on my phone when I look at the walk.
Baby steps I guess..

I noticed this too, Apple made a change with S2 making this ring require more effort. It could be sensing how much arm swing you have for that ring.
