Existin iPhone customers need to sign up for plan in store?

Do existing iPhone customers have to sign up for the phone plan/activate it in store? Or can you just buy the iPhone at the subsidized price then go home and do it via iTunes?

My guess is that to leave the store with it unactivated, you'll probably have to sign a contract that says "if this phone is not activated on the AT&T network with an appropriate plan within 30 days, you authorize us to bill your credit card the remaining amount of the phone" since they know you can activate / unlock the phone with PwnageTool and what not. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I have no problem signing up for the monthly iPhone plan. Like I said, I currently have an iPhone plan. I just want to get in and out as quickly as possible, and to activate it and sign up for the plan at home on my own time. Like how the original iPhone was done...
