Existing iphone 02 uk customers upgrading

Does anyone know if we will have to hand in our 1st gen iphones when upgrading to 3g phone with 02?

If we can keep the 1st gen phone will we be able to just put the sim back in it if we get pissed off with a scratched back on the 3g version?
