You can switch the "Simple Password" option to extend your password preference.

This functionality already exists. Turn off simple passcode in the settings.

changing the setting from simple gives you the option to have a 1 digit passcode + but instead of the keypad you get a keyboard to type on as it becomes alphanumeric.

the advantage of a 6 digit passcode is the possible combinations of code go from 10000 combinations to 2176782336 combinations

I have used this on my iPad and iPhone for over a year now. I like the added security.
