I want to expand the memory of my MBP to 8gb, it already has 4gb, will adding a single 4gb module work??(provided it is the same clock speed as the exisiting one.

Right now your computer has two 2gb memory sticks in it. You'd have to take one of them out to put a 4gb stick in for a total of 6gb.

So the MBP 15 with 4gb has 2x2gb and npt 1x4gb??
Dammit.

Nope cuz the Laptops have DualChannel Support:

Like the other Intel-based Macs, the MacBook uses dual-channel memory. Although you can put RAM in just one slot, when installed in matched pairs, the RAM can achieve its maximum throughput. According to Apple, you probably wouldn’t notice much of a difference on the MacBook Pro, which has a discrete graphics card. But on the MacBook, which shares up to 80MB of its main memory with the onboard graphics system, the extra speed you pick up by interleaving two separate RAM modules is vita

A bit old but still useful, or here:

All Intel Core Macs support dual channel memory access if matching modules are installed. The customary estimate is that this gives a 6% - 8% real world performance benefit
