Hi

I have just bought a seagate external drive for my mac laptop, but it wont let me add anything.

Ive read others notes that say to change it to 'partition 1' in 'disk utilities' but it then wants to delete what I already have on the drive. (added by someone else on a PC i think)

How can i fix it and keep the data on the drive?

cheers

Right-click on the drive and "Get Info" to see the format of the drive, which is most likely NTFS.

NTFS (Windows NT File System)
  • Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
  • Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
[*]To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X: Install NTFS-3G for Mac OS X (free)
  • Some have reported problems using Tuxera (approx 33USD).
  • Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard, but is not advisable, due to instability.
  • AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
  • Maximum file size: 16 TB
  • Maximum volume size: 256TB

Install the NTFS as mentioned above, or if you don't need the data that is already on the drive from the previous PC user:

Delete the partitions, and create a Mac partition.

THen you don't need the extra software.
