Received my new 12-core MacPro 6,1 yesterday and started to set things up today. I wanted to migrate data from an older MacPro Nehalem 2009 running 10.9.1 to my new MP6,1 as part of the initial setup. All went well until the online message on the new MP6,1 indicated I could not do this as my older MacPro Nehalem was running a newer Mac OS X version compared to what was running on the new MP6,1. This confused me no end. How could this be as 10.9.1 was release last year and surely the new MP6,1 was running at least 10.9.1. There was no way to tell at this point, so I had to restart the new MP6,1 setup and create a user account, making sure it was one that did not replicate one already being used on the older MacPro Nehalem 2009, to see what Mac OS X version was running on it. I found it was 10.9.... Bummer.

So now had to update the new MP6,1 and as it happened 10.9.2 had just been released so the new MP6,1 was upgraded to 10.9.2.

Now I had to ensure the UID of the user account I had setup on the new MP6,1 was not in conflict with any user accounts on the older MacPro Nehalem. This took some time as I had to create several accounts to get to a UID that was not in conflict. Once having done that I then removed all the other user accounts.

Now I could fire up Migration Assistant (on the older and newer MacPros) to transfer user accounts and data from the older MacPro Nehalem to my new MP6,1.

Older and new MPs were on same LAN using ethernet.

It first stated 1 hour 30 mins to complete, then quickly changed this to 4 hrs 45 mins, then 2 hrs and 30 mins and then quickly went to 5 minutes.... and then shortly afterwards stated 2 hrs and 25 minutes.... and then back to 2 mins... and so on.... ????!!!!!

So all is well after this weird oscillation of time to complete the data migration.

The new MacPro arriving with 10.9 was a complete surprise and an annoyance to say the least, as it caused me some grief and made the setup more complex than it needed to be.

The new MacPro 6,1 is awesome and sooooooo inconspicuous in my office setting with two older MacPros and two older iMacs.
