I just updated to the beta and was shocked to be greeted to the setup assistant. I got even more worried when I was told I needed to make a new account.

I thought EVERYTHING got deleted. But when I booted into recovery mode, all my data is still there. When I rebooted, my account login was still there. After I logged in, I get suddenly pushed into setup assistant again. I can’t escape and it’s forcing me to create a new account.

What should I do?

run reinstall from recovery mode which will I think install the prior beta on top without loosing data. At least that is what mine did when I had to use it for other reasons a few days ago,

I was in the process of doing that but it was taking too long to download.

I just decided to follow through with making an account. I had a feeling I no longer had an admin account.

But it turns out my one and only account was removed during the update. The user folder was still there and I had to add it back and make it admin via settings. Regrettably, I should have used the same account name instead of making a random one.

It’s still a mess, all my apps are removed from my Launchpad and Applications folder, they were moved to a “Previous Systems” folder in Macintosh HD and a partial folder for the macOS update.

I’m just going to copy non backed up data, then restore from a previous backup.
