Hello,

I 'd like to install windows on my MacBook Pro 5,1 (late 2008 unibody 15') running 10.8.5. i have the latest version of bootcamp.

Here is what i've tried:

**1) Using Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows XP/7/8**

* genuine windows 7 iso - have to run from usb boot drive, optical drive broken
* genuine windows XP OEM install iso
* genuine windows 8 iso

* all three options selected on first BCA menu - install windows 7 on a drive, download and installl the latest driver updates, and create the partition

* partition successfuly created, drivers successfully downloaded
* computer restarts to begin windows installation from boot drive

**point of failure** upon restart, mac logo flashes and then **screen turns black**. Suspected failure of Nvidia drivers, brightness control turned all the way down (i cannot use keyboard to adjust brightness)

**solutions tried:**

1. reboot holding the option key to choose startup disk - USB drive doesn't show up
2. reboot holding down C key to boot from drive - screen turns to black
3. install [REFIT](http://refit.sourceforge.net/) fork (not linked here but its on the page hyperlinked) to select USB drive to boot from - still goes to black screen

**2) Using virtual installation of windows via VMWare Fusion 7 into partition**

* Followed instructions here: http://www.andrewsavory.com/blog/2011/2156
* got to here:

> To do this, you first need to configure VMWare to use the Boot Camp partition ‘raw’, as a real disk rather than a virtual disk. To do this, open up a terminal and type:
>

* my output reads EFI instead of BIOS under type, including for my FAT32 partition
* i try to create the raw disk description and it says "cannot copy the source files" to the destination. Files not created.

**Solutions tried:**

1. Sudo host to allow write - no result
2. use fdisk to make FAT32 partition active - no result

**3) Using virtual installation of windows via Parallels Desktop 10 into partition**

* windows 7/8 install gives this result: Error code “0x80070057” and message “Windows could not format a partition on disk 0”
* windows XP installs and is functional on Parallels, with files installed to partition HOWEVER it **will not boot natively**

**solutions tried:**

1. multiple reformats of the partition in FAT32 format (cannot format into NTFS through OSX Disk Utility - cannot install Windows 7 or 8

**continuing on with Windodws XP through Parallels**

2. Tried ot install Bootcamp Drivers for Windows XP on Macbook Pro 5,1 on Windows XP, failed
3. Tried to install Nvidia drivers for my graphics card through Windows XP, failed again because it is using Parallels drivers and cannot detect my actual hardware

i'm at a loss at this point. I've committed close to 16 horus to this and still haven't come close to solving the issue. Guides online either diverge from my software versions or results. Standard apple response to black screen BEFORE windows install is to do all the steps I outlined in #1.

Can anyone offer their suggestions please?
