Explanation of Optical Ports in Powerbook G4 17"

I believe its mainly for music equipment other than speakers. Like amps, guitars, mics, anything that has the option of doing optical, which usually means another type of device so you can plug all those things into one port. That is probably what the asteroid thing was that Apple is upset about. Optical can give better qualitity since more information can travel faster though that type of connection.
