Why?

because RAM is so cheap these days that developers don't have to optimize every bit and byte of their software anymore, resulting in us having to buy more memory. Also we do more now with our 8gb RAM then back in the days of the commodore 64.

apart from that lion has some memory issues it seems in the sense that it needs lots of it, my feeling is that it is a safari 5.1 memory leak.

I can understand Moore's Law. But why is the OS expanding
to fill the space? Just because it can? :)

Lion has lots of things such as Resume that takes lots of RAM. Things are constantly becoming more RAM hungry which isn't a surprise, it's super-fast compared to your HD or SSD. More RAM = better performance, especially when multitasking.

For sure, went from a 1.8 duo 2GB ram Air to a 2.3 i5 with 4GB and this thing blazes through multitasking.

Makes the Air feel slow in some ways.

Thost RAM requirements are increasing in a linear (and predictable) fashion, not exponentially.

Just sayin'. :)

I think OP meant exponentially literally, not as a adjective of huge increase.

128 = 2^7
256 = 2^8
512 = 2^9
1024 = 2^10
2048 = 2^11
4096 = 2^12

And so on.

lol
I'll just leave this here.

Kinda of math and science related plus thought you guys might like it.

What do you think? (Also i edited out the obscenity with my professional photoshop skills)

That's more suprising than Lion's RAM requirements!

A single doubling operation is not exponential growth, no, but 2^x increases exponentially (follows form cb^x).

Are you kidding ... no modern ENTRY LEVEL computer ships with less than 2Gb of RAM ... and to upgrade its $35 shipped ... even 8Gb shipped is only $80.

You do not specifiy a model. For some macs 8GB costs several hundred dollars.

Sounds about right.

The recommended requirements tend to be double the minimum, too. So in a couple years, I presume we're looking at 8GB recommended and 4GB minimum. ^_^

I use 8GB personally. I find it's a comfortable amount for what I do. I could get by with 4 just fine though.
