I'm currently exploring some "feature" photo editing/managing software to replace iPhoto. A few questions:

1. I have Faces/Places tagged for the majority of photos in my iPhoto library. Can I export this information to Lightroom without compromising completeness/functionality?

2. I've been considering Aperture over Lightroom because of its cheaper price and it's "fit and finish" in OSX, but I'm concerned about getting locked into Apple's ecosystem. I want to make sure that anything I do to my photo library can be moved over easily if/when I make the switch to another platform. Should I stick to Lightroom if I'm more concerned about library portability?

3. Does Aperture play nice with external image editors? PS Elements?

4. What are people's general thoughts about Lightroom vs. Aperture?

Thanks.
