Running iMovie (1) ~ TOAST Titanium 6. (I have iDVD3 but cannot run it because the partition I made for the OS doesn't have enough room to install it. That's another story)
TODAYS NIGGLE:
I have made a movie in iMovie which runs for 35minutes and tried to export it and burn it to a DVD using TOAST.
My first effort took nearly 6 hours to export from iMovie/TOAST encoding it. The results were not a pretty sight = One shot had cars coming towards you and they were juddering as they closed and passed you. There were other horrible bits too.
I HAD to get the movie out as it was being shown to an audience that week, so I exported it out to an S-VHS recorder, which worked BUT, after approx 25 minutes iMovie fell over, so I had to stop and restart from that point, luckily there was a dialogue free shot in black and white, which allowed me to join the recording and it worked fine. Phew!!
SO, I suspect it's because I am new to codecs, mp compression etc etc and as usual, I cannot find a definitive list suggesting which I should use. (iMovie HELP ~ forget it!!)
I am very used to AUDIO / Exporting / compressing / etc etc. So am not a complete novice. Using Logic and Bias Peak for years.
I live in the UK so I need PAL. Any DVD I wish to burn will be shown on domestic DVD players.
Yesterday I tried again, in iMovie, used the setting DV PAL, frame size 320 width 240 height (which is the default) key frames not highlighted; to make the Quicktime export file, which TOAST compressed and then burned. Approx 2 hours for each operation.
RESULT: No more juddering, but the picture quality was in my opinion (compared to the Video Tape) slightly grainy/blurrred or less sharp.
I have trawled around the net for some information, but so far have not found anything as a definitive explanation of which settings to use.
Under iMovie = Expert, there is a whole list of codecs. Nice names, BUT I haven't got a clue about which would be best. I do know that some are more suitable for Internet use and a few other unusual applications. eg: Should I used DV PAL or DVCPro PAL?
If anyone knows the rules here I would love to be let into the secret.
