I am thinking about upgrading to new airport extreme 80211n router and using my old airport express for airtunes in the other room. Since the express is 80211g will it force the extreme to run in 80211g? I have read that any 80211g devices slow down the whole network.

An 802.11b/g/n access point will use the best protocol for each device.

Of course, if you stream audio to the AXP and transfer large files at the same time, you'll notice a slowdown, which will be larger than with a hypothetical 802.11n-AXP.

thanks for the information.

I have configured an Express (g) to extend the range of a new Extreme (n). Will that slow down all traffic to g speeds, or only traffic that goes through the Express?

I am having trouble streaming airtunes through multiple Express/ATV.

If I am just using my Express to print wirelessly and not as a network extender, will that slow my N network down to G?
