exsternal SSD on base iMac 21.5?

Could one buy a base iMac, connect a 250 GB external SSD, by USB3, use the HHD on the Mac as a backup,and have performance similar to the fusion drive at significantly lower cost?

Technically yes I don't see why not. Although if you want best performance you will want thunderbolt which is much more expensive.

Agree. If you want an external SSD for booting, got for TB interface.
