Ext HD activity

I’ve got an ext HD attached to my Mac being used only for Time Machine, and yet I see indication of disc activity at times other than when any back-up is being done. Why is that?

That because is ready, coping data to that drive! It has scan the data (on your Mac) and copy it to the external drive, hence the disc activity will fire up, that’s normal behavior with any backup program!

But this activity is happening long BEFORE a back-up is commanded.
