Sorry to post another ext HD question, everybody, but I'm desperate!

I mainly use my Iomega 250GB desktop HD on my Mac for video editing, etc., so it was severely defragmented. Took it over to my PC and used Windows to defrag it. Worked fine, unplugged it, and then trouble. Now I'm unable to detect the drive in either my Mac or my PC! When I plug it in (via either USB or firewire, neither works), the machine turns on, blue light blinks, and a few whirring sounds, but still nothing shows up on either desktop. I've had this HD for ~3 yrs, have always used it on both systems, and have never had any problems. I used correct procedures of removing it from the PC after the defrag, and it was working fine with all data intact right before I removed the drive.

I have a lot of data on there that I can't lose, so reformatting (if that's even possible at this point) is the last resort. (I bitterly point out that I was cleaning off data and defragging in preparation of backing up, argh!) Any help from anybody would be hugely appreciated!

Some info on what happens when I plug in my HD:

On the PC: Windows gives it a drive letter (H:) through disk management. I don't know if this is helpful, but when I click on the drive in My Computer (labeled Local Disk (H:)) I get a message saying "H: \ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O error."

On the Mac: In Terminal, I was able to find my external hard drive under /Volumes, but when I checked the files and directories, they were all missing but one directory.
