ext HDD for use with Airport Extreme (landisk vs. USB)

My Lacie 500 GB HDD died this morning. The repair shop is working to recover the data. Now I need a new HDD. I want to get a 2.0 TB RAID disk now. I mainly use it to archive my music, photos, and videos wirelessly from my MacBook. My question is, is there any speed or performance difference between getting a regular USB disk and connecting it to the Extreme via USB vs. getting a landisk and connecting it to the lan port since in either case I'm still just accessing it wirelessly.
