Hi, I noticed that one my my partitions didn't show up on my new (its been used for only 2 weeks) western digital My Book home edition didn't show up. I used Disk Utility to do a simple "Repair Drive", and that did the trick.

However, its been a bit noisy and its started to make a grinding sound. Time to replace, or am I just getting paranoid?

I am pretty sure those things have some sort of diagnostics disk that either come with it, or you download and burn to disk.

Call WD, have them walk you through it. Make sure you have your data off of it before you call. Some diagnostics make you format the drive before they compete a check.

Samsung's diagnostics is a disk image you burn to a CD, and boot from. That is the way to go.

Grinding in a HDD (usually)= imminent failure. Some drives however just make noise.
