Extended Virtual work from home to two monitors?

Hi, I am trying to extended my monitor to a second monitor. I have the mini display port to vga adapter and it works for my mac, but when i log into my work from home it opens the java application and that doesn't extended to the 2nd screen. anyone know how to fix this?
