I recently went on a two-day trip. I didn't have access to an outlet for recharging my phone for hours at a time, and wanted to take lots of pictures and videos (we visited the Grand Canyon, etc.). I was frustrated that I couldn't use my iPhone in the van (to pass the time) because I needed to save the battery for pictures.

I really need a new case, so I'm looking into the external battery cases. It looks like Mophie is great, but it's also expensive. What are your recommendations? I'd rather spend no more than about $50, but I would get the Mophie if the cheaper options aren't worth the money.

(I have a Verizon iPhone 4).

Mophie is good choice. Another option is MiLi. Both of them are Apple certified. MiLi has an 3000 mAh battery case that might be an interest to you:
