On my late 2012 mini I have been using an external bluetooth usb dongle located close to my magic keyboard and trackpad to improve connection.
This was working really well with Sierra, but once I upgraded to Mojave I started having problems.
Specifically, once the mini goes to sleep, it loses the bluetooth connection to the keyboard and trackpad so the only way to wake it is to physically attach a USB keyboard.
Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Well, this problem seems to have fixed itself without me having to do anything.
I had initially reverted to the stock Apple Bluetooth, but I got soon very fed up with the lagging so I switched back to the dongle, and found that now it wakes as it should. It seems all it needed was a rest...

You moved a pen on the other side of your desk, didn't you?
I've a 2014 mini that even a super-power new Bluetooth plus dongle on the end of a 4 foot cord won't help.
I know the Mac was using it, still got cruddy signal quality.
The dongle works great on the 2007 mini downstairs.

This made me laugh
Actually in my case the signal with the dongle has always been fine, the problem was that it wouldn’t wake the mini from sleep.
