I had a bad experience with the Apple USB Superdrive, which was probably overkill anyway. A cd got stuck and it's garbage now. Recommendations?

I'd recommend that you DO NOT buy one with a "slot loading" style design (as you found out they can go bad and refuse to eject the disc). Get either a "top loader" (top pops up) or "slide-out tray" design. These may look "clunkier", but they'll last longer.
