External connected to time capsule

Can i have a external hdd connected to my Time Capsule 2014 and have my main photos stored on it from lightroom? or do i need to buy a nas?

i also wonder, i want to show my pictures on my tv, whats the best way for it, if i get a synology, or do i need to get a apple tv also?
