So I am looking into getting an external display... a few of my friends have purchased LCD displays off of http://www.newegg.com and really have been very happy with the results. (and the price) ...

My question, is there a way to have the resolution on an external display be different than that of my iBook? Ex: iBook is 1024x768, and the monitor is for example 1280x1024... can my iBook take advantage of that on the display, or am I stuck at 1024...

alrighty... thanks lots!

your iBook should be able to take advantage of the higher res of the external display, otherwise there would be no point in using one

right but do you know how to set the resolution?
sometimes at work, I hook my iBook up to a display, and all it does is miror the image, and the res doesnt change, and I cant find where to change it.

Look here for the extended desktop hack:

You can change the resolution of the external LCD and you can also change which monitor handles the main desktop (with the icons and the dock), and change position of the monitor (left or right). It's all in system preferences, click display, then click detect display
