Hi all,
This is an issue that I've had for the past 2 years. It originally occurred on my 2016 MacBook Pro 15". Later last year I replaced it with an M1 MacBook Air. Last month I replaced that with my current Mac, a 2017 non-touchbar MacBook Pro 13". What all of these machines have in common is that they only have USB C ports, no HDMI. The other thing they all have in common is that for each of them I've suffered this problem.
The issue at hand is that when I connect them to an external monitor, the monitor constantly cuts out, that is, the external display will momentarily go black as though it has been disconnected. Sometimes the laptop's screen will also cut out, most of the time not. This happens 10-20 times per minute usually.
I have used many many adapters and cables hoping any of them will work. This includes USB C-to-HDMI cables and plug-in adapters for using regular HDMI-to-HDMI cables. I've even tried these cables and adapters with other devices and they work fine(all except one).
Thinking it may be an issue with my cheap $100 1080p monitor, I went out and bought a $500 4K monitor today, and along with it a USB C-to-DisplayPort cable. The issue persists on this monitor.
I should mention that this doesn't happen with other USB C/Thunderbolt 3 functions, such as charging and external storage functionality, only connecting external displays.
The last detail is that this happens on Windows and MacOS.
I am exhausted with this problem, and I hope someone can help me. Thank you!
