I am having an issue where my external display is not giving many resolution options. I have a Early 2011 MBP which should be able to output 2560x1600 at maximum and a Vizio M55-C 4K TV that I am outputting to. Now the highest option under the display settings is 1920x1080 @ 60. Dropping the refresh rate does not do anything. I know that the computer can not display 4k but I would like to see something that is greater than 1080p. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Part of the problem may be that the TV apparently reports that it is a 1080p device (I dont know why though).

Thanks for your time.

Are you using the HDMI port 5?
Looking at the TV setup guide for your Visio, that's the only HDMI port that supports the highest res video connection.

Be sure to try a different cable. (cables are not all the same :D )

I see some Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables that specifically say that they support only 1920 x 1080 on a Mac

(notice the text in red part way down the linked page)

Here's one that claims 4k support, which should be all you need.
