External display not displaying at full resolution

I have a Late 2007 MBP (8600m) and an Acer H233H monitor (capable of 1920x1080). I need to have the monitor far away from my computer, so I am using a 12' HDMI cable with the HDMI to DVI adapter hooked up to my MBP. Under system preferences, I am only able to get 1920x1080i which makes the picture look like crap. The DVI to HDMI adapter I got with a computer I built. Does anyone know how to fix the problem? I had my windoze computer hooked up this distance with a VGA cable and that had the bandwidth to transmit at full resolution. I would suspect that the HDMI cabe would be better but maybe not.
