external display problems

hi all,

got a nov 08 macbook white

i have brought a mini-dvi to dvi connector but i cant get it to work.

display prefs shows the monitor and chooses the correct resolution but the monitor is still blank & goes into power off mode.

ive put it to sleep mode, then re started it, but still no

having tried this with 2 monitors now, im wondering what is going wrong

any ideas?
