External Display Resolution

I just hooked up my Macbook Pro to an external display that runs natively at 1680x1050. Is there an option to select different resolutions for the Macbook Pro and the external display so that I can run both of them at native resolution at the same time?

Unless you have it set to "mirror", they should both run at their native resolution. In "mirror" mode, they have to be set to the same resolution. Otherwise, you can set them independently.

When you use it in extended desktop mode, it shows one display settings panel in each display, so you can set individual resolutions.

Yup you can choose the resolution of the displays in system preferences under 'displays.'

Yes, you can change the resolution under Displays in System Preferences. If you have the option of Mirror checked, both displays will have the same resolution.
