External Drive Access Over Network

I'm trying to use the Files app on my iPad to access an external hard drive that is attached to my MBP and am having some issues. I've gone into the Sharing settings on the MBP and set the whole drive to be shared and all users have R&W access. I can connect to the MBP with my iPad, but once I try to access the drive itself I get an error (picture). I've tried setting up the smb access to the MBP over again and am out of ideas.
Does anyone have any thoughts on fixing this? Or even a different way to accomplish this?

Try ejecting the shared connection on your iPad, turn off sharing on your MBP, restart the MBP, turn sharing back on on the MBP and then connect to server on the iPad again.
