External Drive and iPod issues

For some reason, whenever I try to eject my external time machine drive and ipod I get a message that they are being used by an application and cannot be ejected. I've looked to see what else is running and can't locate a program that is using them. Anybody have any ideas what might be going on

Is iTunes running? Do you have your iTunes music on your time machine drive?

Thanks for the reply, no iTunes running. I carefully went through my dock and checked.
