External Drive Causes 2016 MacBook Pro to Freeze

I have a 2016 15" MacBook Pro and it locks up when I connect my Lacie Thunderbolt drive using the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3/USB-C adapter. It also freezes when I connect my Nexus 5X using USB-C (no comments about the Android phone. It's not my main device. I'm a developer.) Any thoughts on how to resolve this? Everything worked fine on my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro that was replaced by this.
