External Drive for Backups - Recommendations?

Hey All.

Need to be able to backup a MBP with 500GB drive.

I'm thinking of backing up complete restore with SuperDuper
and using TimeMachine as well.

Any recommendations on size, brand, approach would be appreciated. I need to do a similar approach for my mom who just got a new MBP. The simpler the better.
