I have a 2012 rMBP that's attached with an Apple Thunderbolt display; with it are two external HDDs: the first is plugged into the back of the Tb display, while the other—because there are no more available ports on the back of the Tb display—must be plugged into the laptop itself. (The laptop runs in clamshell mode.)
The drive connected to the Tb display mounts on the desktop, and its indicator light turns blue. Meanwhile, the second drive (plugged into the MacBook itself) does not mount. Could it be because the laptop is clamshell'd? I tried swapping the drives, and I had the same result: successful mounting for the drive connected to the Tb display, while unsuccessful mounting for the drive connected to the laptop.
"TL;DR": drives connected to the Tb display's USB port mount—drives connected to the clamshell'd MacBook Pro don't mount. Is it possible to fix this?
—Thanks
