Hey Everyone!

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas this year! I have a problem that I need fixed and I'm looking into a bunch of solutions. I have a WD My Book Studio II but I have to admit...it's not the greatest external HDD out there. It's sole purpose is to harbor all of my iTunes (which includes all my music, TV shows, home movies and movies) and all of my iPhoto (all 23,000 pictures). I use Apple TV a lot for my kids and there will be multiple occasions that I have to restart the drive because it magically shut down on its own.

Long story short...my wife is nervous that all our data will disappear and we'll never get it back. I basically clamshell my late 2011 15" MBP and use an external monitor so I can have the laptop when going away on business. It has 2 2.0 USB ports but DOES have a Thunderbolt port. So...I'm looking into 2 options:

Either the 4TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo (Dual drives so I can RAID one of them) OR go with the LaCie d2 3TB USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt Hard Drive.

Here's my question:

IF I bought the LaCie and connected it directly to the Thunderbolt port on my MBP...can I THEN purchase a WD My Book Live 3TB, plug that into my Airport Extreme, and set it up to RAID the LaCie? I don't want to clutter up my MBP by plugging in the drive and then plugging in the My Book Live into the ethernet...although I know that would be the easiest route. The major difference is price. But I also feel that the LaCie would be a better decision over the WD. The LaCie plus the WD would sit me around $475 on BHPhoto.com, without the Thunderbolt cable (around $525 in total). The WD Thunderbolt Duo would set me back about $545 WITH Thunderbolt cables on BHPhoto.com. So pricewise they are about the same, I guess it's quality and hassle that would be the real question.

I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to RAIDing so that's also where my question lies.

Any help with this would be great!
