External Drive (Seagate Freeagent connected via FW800) interfering CD/DVD drive

When I've the external drive connected CD's often do not mount on the desktop, pressing eject causes the CD to spin up and mount (most of the time) Conversely, when i've a CD in the optical drive, the Harddrive will not mount, but appears in System profiler as an unknown device. Any suggestions? I'm using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.7.
