Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a way to enable shared external drives to be shared over a home network from a logged-out MacMini running Yosemite?

Some background:

I recently upgraded by 2011 MacMini I use as a HTPC and home server with an SSD (for OS & booting) as well as a new 2.0 TB HDD. I also have an external 2.0 TB, FW800 drive that I use for Time Machine - for the Mini as well as a 2012 MBP and 2014 MBA.

Prior to this reinstallation, I was using two external drives (the FW800 drive for archives and media and a USB 2.0 drive for Time Machine) and I am pretty certain I was able to access these drives by simply having the computer on but not logged in to any user (i.e. resting in the login window). This no longer seems to work. I am not able to access the FW800 drive from either of the MacBooks unless a user (any user it seems) is logged in on the Mini. Nor can I access the old USB 2.0 drive when I connect that and share it. Then upon logging out, the drives are no longer accessible. Meanwhile, the internal drives (both SSD and HDD) can be accessed just fine at any time.

The FW800 Time Machine drive is encrypted, if that factors in, but it doesn't explain why the clean formatted, unencrypted USB 2.0 drive also is not visible.

Can anybody offer any insight? I would prefer not to have to have a user logged in at all times for both security reasons as well as convenience accessing the screen remotely for HTPC purposes.

Thanks!
