External drives disappearing from desktop

Anyone else experiencing this in Lion? My external drives are there when I start up, but then disappear. The finder preferences are still checked to display them, but they have gone... I can still access them via the finder window sidebar (and eject if needed), but it is a little annoying. Is there are work round for this, or am I waiting for 10.7.1...?

Click Preference under Finder's menu, then tick Hard disks under "Show these items on the desktop."
